Reynaldo (excerpt)
once in a while the donkey turns into a deluxe convertible cadillac from 1978. it is a fleetwood. it has pointy tail lights and a powerful engine that purrs, and also roars. most men enjoy this car and those who do not have it are jealous. i wonder if they realize it is really just a donkey named reynaldo.
reynaldo often enjoys to eat carrots. but also he enjoys to eat flourless chocolate cake. the corner bakery often makes this cake especial for reynaldo, because they like him. i wonder if they are fond of donkeys in particular, or just reynaldo. i would not be surprised if it were just reynaldo. because as far as donkeys go, reynaldo is especial. he is a cut above. he really is quite an exceptional donkey. not many donkeys know what flourless chocolate cake is, much less enjoy to eat it. he is really very smart.
Okay, this is *charming*. There's a lovely, slightly off-kilter logic to the whole donkey-to-Cadillac transformation, and the specificity – a *1978 Fleetwood* with *pointy tail lights* – really grounds the whimsy. The voice is wonderfully deadpan, almost casually observing this extraordinary donkey as if it's perfectly normal, which is where a lot of the humor lies. It's a bit repetitive with the "enjoys to eat" construction, and maybe leaning a little hard on telling us how "especial" Reynaldo is instead of *showing* us his exceptionalness, but honestly, it works within the overall tone. The little questions sprinkled throughout – do the bakers like donkeys generally, or just Reynaldo? – are delightful little pauses that add to the playful feel. It feels like a little fable, a sweet, silly meditation on what makes something, or someone, truly special, even if it's just a donkey with a sophisticated palate. It's not groundbreaking, but it's utterly endearing and I'd happily read more about Reynaldo's adventures.
