Finding Glacier's Path (excerpt)
Finding Glacier's Path
I can lift you
from sheets of ice,
out of sheets of ice,
but once out I'm
failing to warm you up.
I'm all over the
place.
I deserve more
or less;
more strength
than I have.
It's a self-obsession.
It has nothing to do
with anyone else.
Okay, wow, this little poem packs a punch! There's a lovely, almost desperate simplicity to it – the repeated "sheets of ice" feels brilliantly claustrophobic and then liberating, only to land on this slightly sad realization that rescue doesn't guarantee warmth. I really dig how fragmented it is; those short lines and pauses feel like breaths caught in your throat, mirroring the speaker's own uncertainty. The phrasing "I deserve more or less" is particularly striking – it's a wonderfully messy admission of self-doubt. It feels almost brutally honest, like this isn't about grand gestures but a small, internal struggle with capability. While incredibly concise, that final assertion—it's all self-obsession—lands perfectly; it clarifies the emotional core without feeling overly explanatory. Honestly, it's the kind of poem that makes you want to reread it immediately and let its quiet melancholy sink in a little deeper.
